UI freshman honors society's 5K run to benefit SmileHealthy

URBANA — Phi Eta Sigma, a freshman honors society on the University of Illinois campus, will hold a 5K run Saturday to benefit the not-for-profit Champaign County oral health organization SmileHealthy.

It will be held at 8 a.m., starting south of the Illini Union on the UI Quad, and the cost to enter is $15. All proceeds will go directly to SmileHealthy.

Only Cook County provider received steroid linked to meningitis

SPRINGFIELD — The only Illinois health provider identified to have received a shipment of the epidural steroid associated with the meningitis outbreak is in Cook County, according to the state Department of Public Health.

The health provider was identified as APAC Centers for Pain Management, which has six locations in Chicago and Cook County.

Medical devices that dissolve in water nearer to tests on humans

URBANA — Safe, implantable medical devices that will dissolve rather than be cut out could begin human trials in as little as two years, a University of Illinois professor said Thursday.

The materials could also create compostable electronics such as cellphones, and noncontaminating sensors for water systems.

VA to hold breast cancer awareness walk

DANVILLE — The Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System is sponsoring a breast cancer awareness walk on Oct. 6.

The walk, also sponsored by the VA's Employee Association and the Federal Women's Program will begin at 10 a.m., on the veterans hospital's main campus, 1900 E. Main St., Danville.

So Dr. Ona Uzodike found a way to get some big chunks of time with her patients with chronic health conditions. She's offering the option of two-hour group appointments.
