Hospitals limit visitors due to flu outbreak

URBANA — Two local hospitals have started restricting visitors for all patients, because of the severe flu outbreak.

The restriction went into effect Thursday afternoon at Provena Covenant Medical Center and Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, with patients limited to two visitors at a time.

VA imposing visit restrictions to minimize flu

DANVILLE — The Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System is putting visitor restrictions in place to minimize the spread of influenza.

Officials are asking the public to refrain from visiting the medical center's campus at 1900 E. Main St., Danville, if they have a cough, congestion, runny nose or fever. They may visit after they have not had symptoms for at least 24 hours.

Flu hit local schools before winter break

Even though there's lots of talk about the flu, local schools say more students were absent because of flu-like symptoms before the winter break.

The Champaign schools' lead nurse, Margee Poole, said the school district had more absences caused by flu-like symptoms just before the district's winter break than it has since classes started again this week.

CHAMPAIGN — Public health officials believe the flu outbreak hasn't yet peaked in Champaign County, and they're hoping to hold off a more severe outbreak by urging more people to get vaccinated.
