Danville council ward meetings start Thursday

DANVILLE — A series of city ward meetings kick off on Thursday, giving all residents in the city the opportunity to voice concerns or ask questions about city services.

The city's human relations commission is sponsoring the ward meetings, which are informal and open to the public.

Life Remembered: Shields 'respected and a real gentleman'

Colleagues remember Lyle Shields as a gentleman who was easy to work with on the Champaign County Board.

Mr. Shields, who died Friday at the age of 89, served on the Champaign County Board for 41 years, including 10 years (1986-1996) as its chairman.

URBANA — Roughly 5 percent of the people expected to vote in Tuesday's local elections have already cast their ballots, according to the Champaign County clerk, and about 26,000 people will vote Tuesday if it is anything like the last comparable election.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.

County nursing home census dips

URBANA — The average daily census at the Champaign County Nursing Home dropped to its lowest level in more than three years last month, but the facility's manager said he did not believe it was because of reports of an increase in deaths there over the winter.

Homer rejects selling non-potable water to mine

HOMER — The Homer Village board voted unanimously Monday to deny a request by Sunrise Coal for up to 540,000 gallons of non-potable water.

The move came less than a month after the same board voted 4-3 to provide treated water and sewer services to the coal company.

Assessor candidate's residency questioned

URBANA — Democrats are again questioning the legal residency of Laura Sandefur, the independent candidate for Cunningham Township assessor, after a mail piece sent by her campaign this weekend.

Sandefur is challenging incumbent Cunningham Township assessor Dan Stebbins in Tuesday's municipal election.

School board hears about pilot alternative to suspension

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign school board heard Monday about a program that could provide students a chance to learn academics and social skills and catch up on homework, rather than being suspended out of school.

The board is expected to vote April 22 on the program, which would be a one-year pilot.
