URBANA — Officials are crediting a 4-cent-per-gallon gas tax with funding more than $1 million in road improvements during the next 18 months, and city council members will take a bus tour today to see the areas scheduled for upgrades.
SPRINGFIELD — Gov. Pat Quinn on Tuesday signed legislation (HB4568) authorizing $1.6 billion in bonding authority for road, rail and transit projects all over Illinois.
But it has just $150,000 for one project in Illinois Department of Transportation District 5, which consists of Champaign, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, McLean, Piatt and Vermilion counties.
A portion of St. Mary's Road will be closed for about six weeks starting Thursday.
Beginning at 7 a.m. that day, the road will be closed in both directions between Fourth Street in Champaign and Lincoln Avenue in Urbana for road improvements.
Besides motor vehicle traffic, pedestrians and bicyclists will not have access to the road. It is expected to reopen Aug. 23.
URBANA — Businesses at the intersection of Lincoln and University avenues in Urbana want patrons to know they'll be open next week even if getting to them might be a bit challenging.
CHAMPAIGN — There was no early start to the Fourth of July holiday for Assistant Champaign City Engineer Dave Clark.
About 8:30 p.m. Monday, someone alerted the Champaign County sheriff's office that a portion of the concrete pavement on Olympian Drive west of Market Street had heaved up, leaving a slab of concrete sticking up in the air.
CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign public works department temporarily shut down Olympian Drive between Prospect Avenue and Market Street in north Champaign Tuesday morning for emergency repairs.
Hot temperatures over the last several days apparently caused the pavement to fail. Public works employees are fixing the problem. It's unknown now when it will reopen.
CHAMPAIGN — Starting Friday, Staley Road will be closed for several weeks to all through traffic between Bradley Avenue and Bloomington Road to allow the start of the second stage of the Staley Road improvement project.
CHAMPAIGN — A small but important project to open development opportunities just north of the intersection of Fourth Street and Bradley Avenue will begin on Wednesday.
Crews will begin building a 450-extension of North Fourth Street, and the project is expected to be completed by Sept. 14, according to a city press release.
DANVILLE — An Urbana construction company, O’Neil Brothers, turned in the low bid this morning for the city of Danville’s Fairchild Street subway tunnel replacement project.
DANVILLE — Danville city officials will be opening bids today (Monday, June 11) for construction of the long-awaited Fairchild Street overpass project.
