Pavement work planned on Wright south of Green

CHAMPAIGN — The southbound block of Wright Street south of Green Street will be closed for parts of three days this week.

Shaw Brothers Construction is scheduled to close Wright Street southbound between Green and John streets to repair pavement on Wright.

The closure is scheduled to start at 7 a.m. Tuesday and reopen at 7 a.m. Thursday.


Westbound Bradley lanes to be closed part of next week

CHAMPAIGN — If you use Bradley Avenue to drive west between Prospect and Mattis avenues, you might think about a different route next week.

Both westbound lanes of Bradley will be closed at Willis Avenue starting Monday.

Traffic will be maintained in each direction by shifting traffic into an eastbound lane of Bradley.


Kirby Avenue detour changed to Curtis Road for heavy vehicles

CHAMPAIGN — The detour for the upcoming closure of Kirby Avenue over Interstate 57 has been changed.

Kirby will be closed beginning Monday through much of the summer while the I-57 overpass is repaired.


Philo Road project may be in jeopardy

URBANA — A $1.1 million project to rebuild a deteriorating section of Philo Road in Urbana may be in jeopardy after the discovery of legal opinions that appear to bar the county from participating in its reconstruction.


Road closed: Kirby over I-57 to shut down for two months

CHAMPAIGN — The bridge carrying Kirby Avenue over Interstate 57 in Champaign will be closed for two months while it is repaired.

Kirby Avenue will be closed between Cobblefield Road and Holmstrom Street between June 4 and Aug. 3.

Motorists will be detoured using Staley Road, Windsor Road, (Curtis Road for heavy traffic) and Duncan Road.


Subway closure hurts thrift shop business

DANVILLE — Lara Cottrill remembers when the Danville Salvation Army Family Thrift Shop did a fairly brisk business.

But Cottrill, who manages the store and warehouse, said business has fallen off since the city closed the Fairchild Street subway more than a year ago.


Urbana council votes to raise gas tax

URBANA — Giving no comment before the vote, city council members on Monday night approved of Mayor Laurel Prussing's plan to raise the city gas tax from 2.4 to 4 cents per gallon.

The change will be effective in July. Council members voted 5-2 on Monday and gave most of their comments in a discussion last week.


North Vermilion price tag will exceed $150,000

DANVILLE — Taxpayer costs associated with the planned retail development on North Vermilion Street continue to increase as the city will be spending more than $150,000 to relocate the Lowe's entrance to accommodate traffic to the Meijer store that will be built across the street.


Rising Road section to close Thursday

CHAMPAIGN — To install a water main across Rising Road, Cross Construction and Illinois American Water will close Rising Road from Springfield to Kirby avenues for two days starting at 7 a.m. Thursday.

Local traffic will be allowed to properties just south of Springfield Avenue. The road is expected to be open by 5 p.m. Friday.


Curb ramps put bump in Liberty Lane plans

DANVILLE — Incorporating improvements to the pedestrian curb ramps along Liberty Lane has pushed back plans to resurface the heavily traveled street that's severely deteriorated in some sections. But city officials still expect work on Liberty to begin in July.
