Hunger walk set Sunday

URBANA — This year's CROP Hunger Walk, sponsored by several churches, will begin Sunday at Unitarian Universalist Church, 309 W. Green St., U.

Registration begins at 1:45 p.m. and the walk starts at 2 p.m.

Champaign County United Way short of goal by 9 percent

CHAMPAIGN — Contributions to the United Way of Champaign County are running behind, with less than three months left to meet the agency’s $3.3 million goal.

As of Tuesday, the United Way had raised a bit over $3.03 million, about 9 percent behind where fundraising was at this time last year, says United Way President and CEO Sue Grey.


Pizza giveaway to help Danville club

DANVILLE — Papa Murphy's Pizza in Danville is sponsoring a pizza giveaway on April 17 to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Danville.


Liautaud donates $300,000 to benefit Frances Nelson

CHAMPAIGN — Jimmy John Liautaud, founder of Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches chain, has donated $300,000 to Promise Healthcare, the parent organization of Frances Nelson Health Center and SmileHealthy.

Most of the money will be used to help with the cost of care of medical and dental patients coming to Frances Nelson, said Promise Healthcare Executive Director Nancy Greenwalt.

Girl Scouts to honor 5 adult Women of Distinction

For 22 years, Girl Scouts of Central Illinois has recognized outstanding women for their contributions to their communities and for being role models to young women.

At a Thursday banquet at the Hilton Garden Inn in Champaign, Ranija Turner will be honored as the Young Woman of Distinction.

It's the Ready Set Grow Young Children's Expo being held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday (today) at Lincoln Square Mall in Urbana.


Sybil Mervis chosen for First Citizen award

DANVILLE — Vermilion County businesswoman, community volunteer and philanthropist Sybil Mervis was named the 2012 First Citizen by the Danville Chapter of AMBUCS, members announced Thursday.

A banquet honoring Mervis is being planned at Turtle Run Banquet Center in Danville. Details will be released at a later date.


Vintage Vinyl donations sought

CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois Radio Reader's Vintage Vinyl used record sale will accept, starting Tuesday, donations of records, CDs, DVDs, video games and players, stereo equipment, speakers and CD and DVD players.
