Champaign bus company vows to fix safety violations

Even though he said the allegations are unjust and blown out of proportion, the owner of a Champaign bus company said the group plans to comply with the request of a federal transportation group.

After an investigation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration gave an unsatisfactory safety rating to Lincolnland Express, better known as LEX.

Sewer work to close lane of Marketview Drive

CHAMPAIGN — Traffic will be reduced on West Marketview Drive in Champaign beginning on Thursday for sanitary sewer work.

A west lane of Marketview Drive, just west of Moreland Boulevard, will be closed for sanitary sewer work at 502 W. Marketview Drive. Westbound traffic will be reduced to a single lane.

The lane is scheduled to reopen by Nov. 21, weather permitting.

Urbana parade will disrupt traffic briefly on Friday

URBANA — Traffic in downtown Urbana will be disrupted for a few minutes Friday afternoon while Urbana High School holds a parade to cheer its boys' soccer and football teams.

URBANA — Reducing Windsor Road to two travel lanes and building a roundabout at its intersection with Race Street would eventually cause long traffic jams during peak hours, according to a Champaign County Regional Planning Commission study.

Water main work to affect Airport Road traffic

URBANA — Airport Road in Urbana will be closed to through traffic for about two days while a new water main is installed.

Airport Road will be closed to all through traffic east of Cunningham Avenue beginning at 7 a.m. Thursday for the installation of a new water distribution main at Cunningham Avenue and Airport Road.

MTD board to vote on $195,000 increase in property taxes

CHAMPAIGN — The governing board of the Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District will vote in December on a proposal to raise the bus system's property tax levy by 3 percent, or $195,000, next year.

The MTD board will consider approving a $6.71 million property tax levy at its Dec. 5 meeting. That's up from $6.51 million this year.

MTD sets record for passengers

CHAMPAIGN — Unofficially, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District buses carried a record number of passengers in October.

Approximately 1.36 million riders boarded MTD buses in October, Managing Director Bill Volk told the MTD board on Wednesday, the last day of the month.

October 2004 was the previous monthly record-holder with 1.3 million riders.

It's all about one project: the Windsor Road overpass reconstruction. Specifically, correspondence about trying to coordinate the project with the state government.

Rail crossing on Springfield Avenue to close for several days

CHAMPAIGN — The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that starting Monday the Canadian National Railway will begin work to replace the railroad crossing on Springfield Avenue west of Duncan Road.

The crossing will be closed to all traffic while the work is done. It's expected to take seven to 10 days to complete.
