Mild temperatures, wet week ahead

CHAMPAIGN — Warm temperatures will remain through at least Wednesday, but keep an umbrella close as the National Weather Service forecasts showers and thunderstorms through Friday.

Early Monday morning brings the first chance for thunderstorms. The high temperature is expected to reach the mid-60s during the afternoon, but showers are likely throughout the day.

Little cause for alarm in precipitation since 2012

CHAMPAIGN — You'd never know it but local precipitation since Jan. 1, 2012, is still running well below normal.

Even after the 1.8 inches of rain officially recorded by the Illinois State Water Survey between 8 a.m. Wednesday and 8 a.m. Friday, precipitation over the last 15 1/2 months is more than 6 inches below normal.

Boating restricted on Middle Fork

DANVILLE — River levels rose in Vermilion County on Thursday following heavy rains in northern Vermilion and southern Iroquois counties, prompting Illinois Conservation Police to restrict boating on the Middle Fork of the Vermilion River.

Update: Severe thunderstorm watch issued for the area

UPDATED 11:40 p.m. Wednesday

The National Weather Service has canceled a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Champaign County, eastern Douglas County, northern Edgar County and southern Vermilion County and another one for northeastern Champaign County.

Tornadoes' 'hook echo' discovered here 60 years ago

CHAMPAIGN — Since 1950, Illinois tornadoes have touched down in April more often than any other month, but only one of those was responsible for the first radar image of a "hook echo."

And it was right here in Champaign County.

Cool start to the week will give way to a warm weekend

CHAMPAIGN — Spring is taking its time, but warmer temperatures are expected toward the end of this week.

The first day of April is not expected to feel much like spring, though. The National Weather Service is forecasting a windy Monday with temperatures only in the low 40s during the afternoon. Overnight lows are expected to be around 21 going into Tuesday.

Organizers of Mahomet's annual Spring Gardening Seminar learned an important lesson after last year's inaugural event: Although gardeners love to learn about their craft, they're also eager to get their hands dirty after the long winter.

Weather spotters class scheduled

The Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency and the National Weather Service will hold a weather spotters class at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Tilton Public Works Building, 301 Fairchild St., Tilton.

The class is free and open to first-timers as well as trained spotters who need a refresher course. No registration is required.
