Mother Nature bats last. And sometimes she carries a particularly big bat. About the time we think it's the last pitch of the bottom half of the last inning, we end up with an extra inning of winter. A few warm days in March and we are in the outfield admiring the green grass while Mother Nature blasts a cold one over the fence.

Flood advisory issued for two area counties

The National Weather Service has issued a flood advisory for Ford and Iroquois Counties until 2 p.m. Monday.

The weather service said even though just light rain is in the forecast on Monday, the combination of Monday's rainfall, Sunday's rainfall and melting snow will cause stream and river levels to rise.  This could cause minor flooding of some rural roads.

Cities order sidewalks shoveled in business districts

The cities of Champaign and Urbana have declared that sidewalks in certain parts of town must be shoveled after Tuesday’s storm.

Snow plow crews to work through the night

Public works crews were scheduled to plow snow through the night and into the morning in the wake of significant snowfall.

CHAMPAIGN — For the third consecutive month and the 11th of the last 14, February temperatures in Champaign-Urbana were above average — but just barely.

The mean temperature last month was 29.8 degrees, while the average February mean is 29 degrees.

Two weather advisories issued for East Central Illinois

    The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for Ford and Iroquois Counties from 3am Tuesday morning through midnight Tuesday night.
    Light snow is expected to develop Monday night and will become more widespread toward daybreak Tuesday.

Updated: Statewide tornado drill now set for Wednesday; Red Cross has mobile app

A statewide tornado drill originally scheduled for Tuesday now will be held on Wednesday instead.

The threat of severe weather on Tuesday means the test, part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, will be delayed until 10 a.m. Wednesday, according to Rick Harper of the Vermilion County Emergency Management Agency.

Heavy snow possible early in the week; mild weekend ahead

CHAMPAIGN — The National Weather Service says more snow and cold is on the way for the early part of the work week, but conditions will grow milder by Friday.

Light snow could begin falling along the Interstate 74 corridor Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service. Early accumulations could total up to an inch before the precipitation begins mixing with rain.

Winter Weather Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for DeWitt and McLean Counties until noon Wednesday. The advisory calls for snow and freezing drizzle. Accumulations of 1 to 2 inches of snow is expected Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning. Total snow amounts are expected to be 4 to 5 inches by noon on Wednesday.

Champaign council to consider West Washington Street storm water plan

CHAMPAIGN — Residents of a flood-prone central Champaign neighborhood could begin to see relief in 2014 if the city council chooses to move forward with plans for a $2.1 million storm water detention park just west of Washington and Russell streets.
