Plenty of sun and cold expected this week

CHAMPAIGN — As freezing rain and ice accumulations dissipated Sunday night, the National Weather Service forecasts that the rest of the week should be relatively unremarkable.


National Weather Service issues winter advisory

The National Weather Service on Saturday afternoon issued a winter weather advisory for central Illinois, calling for rain changing to freezing rain and sleet overnight.

Local and area police maintain that driving conditions can deteriorate quickly in such conditions and urge drivers to keep distance between their vehicles and others and allow extra time for travel.


How hot was 2012? Hottest ever

CHAMPAIGN — If it seemed a little toasty around here last year, you are correct; 2012 was the warmest year in Champaign-Urbana weather history.

The mean temperature for the year was 55.7 degrees, almost a half-degree warmer than the previous record of 55.3 degrees in 1931, according to state climatologist Jim Angel at the Illinois State Water Survey.


Milder week on tap with warmer temperatures and rain expected

CHAMPAIGN — The National Weather Service forecasts that temperatures will get progressively warmer as the week goes on, peaking in the low 50s by Thursday or Friday.


Champaign crews set to battle snow

CHAMPAIGN — The Champaign Public Works Department has begun mobilizing resources for Monday's afternoon's snowfall.

"We are following the plans set forth in the city's Snow and Ice Control Plan," said Public Works Director Dennis Schmidt in a release. "Public Works staff has prepped the snowplowing equipment."


Winter Weather Advisory for large section of Illinois

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory in effect from noon Monday, New Year's Eve, until 6am Tuesday, New Year's Day. The counties included in the Advisory are: Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, Macon, McLean, Moultrie, Piatt, Shelby, and Vermilion.


Vermilion County on edge of snowstorm

DANVILLE — Vermilion County's first snowstorm this winter caused about a couple dozen minor traffic accidents and knocked out power to about 1,000 Ameren Illinois customers, officials reported Wednesday.


Snow relatively scarce in C-U in recent years

CHAMPAIGN — It's been a long time since Champaign-Urbana experienced a big winter storm.

Last winter's greatest snowstorm, according to the Illinois State Water Survey, was just 4 inches on Jan. 13. The season's snowfall total was just 10.9 inches, plus another half-inch in the spring.


East Central Illinois crews prepared for snow

CHAMPAIGN — While many families spent Tuesday celebrating the Christmas holiday, some area public works departments were getting ready for snow to arrive in East Central Illinois.

The National Weather Service issued a winter weather advisory for Champaign, Douglas, Moultrie, Shelby and Vermilion counties from midnight to 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Snow is expected to begin shortly after 3 a.m. around Champaign and Danville and will continue through the morning hours on Wednesday, according to the advisory.
