Weather service says high near 70 on Monday; dense fog and thunderstorms likely

CHAMPAIGN — After a mild weekend opened the month of December, the National Weather Service is forecasting a high of 70 degrees on Monday afternoon and warns of dense fog early Monday morning.

After midnight tonight, visibility could be recuded to less than a quarter-mile. A dense fog advisory is in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.

Local police help out after Sandy

URBANA — Three local police officers had extra reason to give thanks this year. They don't live in New Jersey.

But Jay Loschen, Michael Wertz and Ryan Lepp were more than happy to go to the hurricane-ravaged state earlier this month to put their police skills to use helping officers there, many who had lost their homes.

Road salt the same or cheaper this year

CHAMPAIGN — After rising steadily for the past 10 years, road salt prices dropped 10 percent for the city this year.

C-U saw cool, wet October

CHAMPAIGN — October was cooler and wetter than normal, the second consecutive month of those conditions in Champaign-Urbana after an unusually warm and dry first part of 2012.

The average temperature last month was 51.6 degrees, which was 2.3 degrees below normal. The average daily high was 61.3 degrees, almost 4 degrees below the average October high.

Ameren sending more workers to help with aftermath of Sandy

ST. LOUIS — Ameren will send another wave of workers to the East Coast to help repair downed power lines and other damage left in the trail of superstorm Sandy.

The local electricity and gas utility earlier this week had already sent 550 Ameren workers to Somerset and Lawrenceville, N.J., to assist the utility workers there.

Birdland: Autumn can turn you upside down

Once in a while, this country mouse likes to get in touch with her urban, so this morning, I took a detour on my bike to visit The Cracked Truck that parks near University Laboratory High in Urbana.

Freeze Warning issued for two area counties

The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for McLean and DeWitt counties, in effect from 3 to 8 a.m. Saturday.

Overnight temperatures will drop into the upper 20s.  Be sure to take your sensitive plants indoors.

A Life Remembered: Meteorologist Reese a 'fun-loving' professional

The communities of central Illinois are remembering popular WCIA-TV meteorologist Robert Reese, who has lost his battle against cancer.

Mr. Reese, 50, passed away Tuesday night at the University of Chicago Hospital. He had battled cancer for many years and was most recently fighting pneumonia.
