New storm warnings to start next month

You'll hear new warnings for tornadoes and severe thunderstorms this spring that will provide more information about what kind of safety threat and damage can be expected.

The National Weather Service office in Lincoln says the enhanced warnings will begin on an experimental basis on April 1 across the Midwest.

Storm doubles year's snowfall total

CHAMPAIGN — Sunday's 11.5-inch snowfall doubled the amount of snow Champaign-Urbana has seen this year and makes this March the third-snowiest in local weather history.

Up to Sunday, Champaign-Urbana had received 11.4 inches of snow since Dec. 1, far below the seasonal average of 23.2 inches.

Weather chases truckers off highway

CHAMPAIGN — Carrying everything from papayas to paint cans, truck traffic in central Illinois tapered to a trickle Monday as snow clogged interstate highways around Champaign.

At the Road Ranger truck stop 3 miles north of Champaign, semitrailer tractors jammed the parking lot Monday morning as drivers sought a safe haven from dicey pavement.

Most Carle doctor offices re-opening today

URBANA — Carle Physician Group says most of its doctors' offices will be open Monday (today) from noon to 5 p.m.

But the Carle facilities at 1802 S. Mattis Ave., C, and in Tuscola, Mattoon and Effingham will remain closed today.

The Climate Prediction Center at the National Weather Service says that Illinois has an increased chance of above-average precipitation for March and for the three-month period through May.

Winter storm warning issued for Sunday

The National Weather Service in Lincoln has issued a winter storm warning for heavy snow from 4 a.m. Sunday to 7 a.m. Monday.

Snow will spread over the area from the west between midnight Saturday and 3 a.m. Sunday and will continue much of the day.

Public works crews get ready for anticipated snowstorm

Local public works crews spent Friday making preparations for a snowstorm that is forecast to reach the area this weekend.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch in effect from late tonight through Monday morning for Champaign, Coles, DeWitt, Douglas, Edgar, McLean, Piatt and Vermilion counties.
