In the spotlight: Paul Pilkington

Mike Small isn''t the only Illinois coach who''s shown he still has what it takes to compete.

While Small has been golfing up a storm for several years – qualifying for the last two Western Opens as well as this year''s PGA Championship – Pilkington turned in an eye-opening performance of his own earlier this spring.

Illini coach on run

Illinois cross-country coach and track assistant Paul Pilkington won the master''s division (over 40) at the Indianapolis Life 500 Festival Mini-Marathon on May 8.

Pilkington, 45, finished 12th overall, completing the half-marathon distance in 1:09.35.

In the Hunt

Freshman Cassie Hunt braved the snowy conditions Monday to finish 201st at the NCAA women''s Cross-Country Championships in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She finished the 6,000-meter course in 22 minutes, 3 seconds.

Illinois'' Bill earns honor

Illinois sophomore Jason Bill was named the Big Ten''s cross-country male athlete of the week after he defeated a strong field Saturday at the Missouri Cross-Country Challenge.

Bill pays Missouri a surprise

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Jason Bill of Illinois placed first in the Missouri Cross-Country Challenge on Saturday, but the Illini couldn''t match the host Tigers'' depth in the team race.

Four Missouri runners finished immediately behind Bill in the 8-kilometer event as the Tigers scored 22 points to 33 for runner-up Illinois in the four-team field.

Kronforst''s milestone victory fits the bill

MAHOMET For Jason Bill, this was neither the time nor the place to make a bid for the spotlight.

So, as the freshman ran virtually step for step with senior John Kronforst toward the finish line Saturday, Bill respectfully deferred at the last second to the acknowledged leader of the Illinois men''s cross-country team.

Illini Kronforst, Wahls, climbing to top

Unlike one of his hosts, Aaron Wahls never did cross paths with a bear. Deer, prairie dogs and domesticated llamas were about as exotic as the animal scenery got for the Illinois senior during his trip to Rocky Mountain territory.

Not that Wahls ever doubted Ed Torres'' story about his relatively close encounter with a black bear while the Colorado cross-country All-American was out on a run.

Kronforst points Illinois in right direction

NORMAL Senior cross-country runner John Kronforst finished third Saturday at the Illinois State Pre-Regional Meet, leading Illinois to its first team victory since 1999.

The UI women, paced by senior Celi Dietzen''s eighth-place finish, earned second place behind Northwestern.

New coach hopes to make name for UI runners

CHAMPAIGN Since their marriage in 1998, it''s been a running joke no pun intended between Karen Harvey and Kevin Sullivan.

When folks discover the identity of her husband a 2000 Olympian and four-time NCAA track champion the all-too-common response is: Oh, you''re Kevin Sullivan''s wife?

Illini runners add former All-American

CHAMPAIGN Former Michigan All-America runner Karen Harvey was hired as Illinois women''s cross-country coach and assistant track coach.

I think she''s going to be just a great addition, Illini track and field coach Gary Winckler said Tuesday in announcing Harvey''s selection. She brings a youth and enthusiasm to the program that I think is well needed, and she''s a hard worker. ... She just brings a lot of dimensions to the program that I think will complement (assistant) John (Baumann) and myself well.
