Baseball falls to EIU

CHAMPAIGN — Thomas Lindauer hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Illinois baseball team lost 8-4 to Eastern Illinois on Tuesday.

The Illini committed three errors in the sixth inning and the Panthers capitalized by scoring all eight of their runs in the frame.

Stricker gets Masters advice

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Steve Stricker wouldn’t mind if Tiger Woods returned the favor, only it’s not that easy.

Woods is back to No. 1 in the world, a return to the top that received a boost last month at Doral when Stricker worked with him for nearly an hour on the putting green.

Baseball ends Hoosiers' 18-game run

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In his first college start, Ryan Castellanos took down mighty Indiana on Sunday.

The freshman pitched six solid innings as the Illini beat No. 16 Indiana 3-2 to avoid a sweep while snapping the Hoosiers’ NCAA-leading 18-game winning streak.

Tyler Jay and Bryan Roberts combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A dominant performance by Alina Weinstein on Saturday night propelled the Illinois women’s gymnastics team to its third NCAA Championships appearance in program history.

Points headed to the Masters

HUMBLE, Texas ­— Former Illinois golfer D.A. Points arrived at the Houston Open having failed to break 70 in his last nine rounds on the PGA Tour.

He had made only two cuts in nine tournaments this year, both times finishing at the bottom of the pack.

All that changed Sunday, even after a final round delayed by thunderstorms.

Points rides putter to top of tourney

HUMBLE, Texas — The putter D.A. Points once took from his mother paid off nicely for him Thursday in the Houston Open.

Points, a former Illini, opened with five straight birdies and wound up with an 8-under-par 64 on a pleasant morning with only moderate wind at Redstone Golf Club. He had a 1-shot lead over Cameron Tringale and John Rollins.

Spencer honored by conference

CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after claiming the 100 meters and placing second in the 400 hurdles at the Texas State Elite Meet, the league office announced Wednesday.

Weinstein, See shine at Big Ten meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Illinois women’s gymnastics team placed fourth during Saturday’s Big Ten Championships, compiling 196.475 points. Nebraska won the eight-school meet with a score of 197.800.

The Illini won their afternoon session.

“We have been talking about momentum all year long and continued to build it in the month of March,” Illinois coach Kim Landrus said.

Delgado earns shot at national title

DES MOINES, Iowa — Jesse Delgado already has a Big Ten wrestling title at 125 pounds on his resume this season.

Now the Illini sophomore will strive for a national title in the same weight class.

Delgado beat Nashon Garrett of Cornell 10-5 in a semifinal match Friday night at the NCAA Championships.
