TUSCOLA – He's won three major area tournaments and checks in second in the race for East Central Illinois Amateur Golf Association player of the year.

Yet Jamie Fairbanks hasn't been happy with his golf game.

It''s a Twin City triple

URBANA – Jamie Fairbanks won his first two Twin City men's golf titles with brilliance. On Sunday, he captured another with his grittiness.

Fairbanks shook off a dreadful front nine at Urbana Country Club, rallied to force a playoff and defeated Bill Hobbs on the second hole Sunday. It was his first Twin City crown since 1992 and his third overall, adding him to a list that includes Jake Goldstein, Jim Thompson and Joe Burden. Only five players have more.

Dobrovolny, Hobbs, Fairbanks break away from pack

CHAMPAIGN – Heading into the Twin City men's golf tournament, most observers expected former pros Jamie Fairbanks and Bill Hobbs to battle for the title.

Illinois golfer Chris Dobrovolny has turned it into a three-way scramble.

Tatelines: Dobrovolny hits stride in own time

“I don’t care if the Blue Course is easier than the Big Orange. A score of 64 is still mighty good.”

This comment drew nodding “you bet” agreement during Saturday’s rain delay at Champaign Country Club. That eight-birdie round, turned in a couple of weeks ago at Savoy, put Chris Dobrovolny in the center of local golf buzz.

Evans gets even better

CHAMPAIGN Wendy Evans plays golf once a year at the Champaign Country Club. This year, she made her round count.

After a first-round 83, Evans carded a second-round 78 Wednesday to win the Women''s Twin City Tournament. First-round leader Betsy Holder shot an 84 and finished second, 3 strokes behind Evans. K.K. Green took third.

UI coach balancing work, play

CHAMPAIGN – If you are 300th best player in baseball, you make at least $1 million a year. If you're No. 300 in football, you get a guaranteed nice check.

But be the No. 300 golfer, and you start looking for other work. Like coaching at your alma mater.

Dilger in hunt

Former Illini Ken Dilger shot a second-round 82 to make the cut at Thursday's NFL players' portion of the Cadillac NFL Golf Classic in Clifton, N.J. The Indianapolis tight end is at 168 and trails leader Craig Hentrich of Tennessee by 21 strokes.

Dalbey cruises to UI Open title

SAVOY – Tiger Woods wasn't the only runaway winner of a golf tournament Sunday.

Danville's Paul Dalbey, who started the day with a 3-stroke lead, powered to an 8-shot victory at the 46th UI Open, the largest margin since Jamie Fairbanks won by 12 shots in 1993.

Danville's Dalbey has dandy start

SAVOY – If the ECIAGA tournament series is designed to bring together the area's best golfers, it's working this weekend.

The UI Open leaderboard features players from Champaign-Urbana, Danville and Rantoul as the tournament rides into today's final round. Paul Dalbey of Danville shot 5-under-par 67 on Saturday for a 3-shot lead over Champaign's Joe Thompson.
