URBANA — As a high school junior at Rantoul, Hanna Mennenga became the 10th softball pitcher in IHSA history with a 400-strikeout season.
As great as the feat, it was almost as if no one noticed.
“I sent out so many emails,” Mennenga said, “jucos, Division Is, Division IIs, Division IIIs. Only one Division I emailed and said they might be interested.”
That was Northern Iowa.
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In his first college start, Ryan Castellanos took down mighty Indiana on Sunday.
The freshman pitched six solid innings as the Illini beat No. 16 Indiana 3-2 to avoid a sweep while snapping the Hoosiers’ NCAA-leading 18-game winning streak.

The sophomore is the one Illini who has played in all 29 of the team’s softball games.
She is the one who drove in the first Illinois run in Wednesday’s 6-5 nonconference loss to Indiana State at Eichelberger Field.
URBANA — When the day was done, when the scorebooks were closed, when the bats were put away, Illinois’ softball team had a doubleheader split to show for its 41/2 hours at Eichelberger Field on an overcast Saturday.
The UI win — 5-4 in the second game against No. 24 Nebraska — was the eighth in school history at home against a nationally ranked opponent.
CHAMPAIGN — Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer was named Big Ten Track Athlete of the Week after claiming the 100 meters and placing second in the 400 hurdles at the Texas State Elite Meet, the league office announced Wednesday.
EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Illinois women’s gymnastics team placed fourth during Saturday’s Big Ten Championships, compiling 196.475 points. Nebraska won the eight-school meet with a score of 197.800.
The Illini won their afternoon session.
“We have been talking about momentum all year long and continued to build it in the month of March,” Illinois coach Kim Landrus said.
DES MOINES, Iowa — Jesse Delgado already has a Big Ten wrestling title at 125 pounds on his resume this season.
Now the Illini sophomore will strive for a national title in the same weight class.
Delgado beat Nashon Garrett of Cornell 10-5 in a semifinal match Friday night at the NCAA Championships.
CARBONDALE — Reliever Bryan Roberts helped streaking Illinois escape a ninth-inning jam, and his teammates responded with three runs in the top of the 10th to pull out a 7-5 nonconference baseball victory against Southern Illinois on Saturday.
