Gymnasts fourpeat at Big Tens

IOWA CITY, Iowa — It wasn't perfect, but they'll take it. Justin Spring's Illinois men's gymnastics team claimed its fourth straight Big Ten championship, outlasting runner-up Penn State 352.950-350.000 on Friday at Iowa. The Nittany Lions are ranked No. 1 in the country.

Scoreless streak results in another close softball loss

URBANA — It didn't take Illini softball coach Terri Sullivan long to zero in on the problem. "You need to score to win," Sullivan said.

For the second consecutive game — and the third time this season — the Illini lost a 1-0 decision. Wednesday's setback at Eichelberger Field was to Illinois State University.

Golfers third in Augusta

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Illinois fired a 6-under 282, the second-best round of the season, to cap a third-place finish at the Augusta State Invitational on Sunday.

The Illini were 8 shots behind No. 1 Texas and host Augusta State.

Illinois' Thomas Pieters (9 under) tied for sixth and Mason Jacobs (7 under) tied for ninth.

Cuevas gains confidence, sparks softball win

URBANA — Stephanie Cuevas is used to catching softballs.

Wednesday night, she caught fire.

The University of Illinois softball catcher — who is in the lineup for her defense — batted three times against Indiana State and each time drove in a run at Eichelberger Field as the Illini dropped the Sycamores 7-2.

Hackett's home run lone bright spot in finale

URBANA — There are days softball players and coaches look at the scoreboard and wish a part of their run total could be saved for a future game.

There are other days — Sunday, against Minnesota for example — they are simply thankful the opponent's run total doesn't carry over.

Illini sweep Gophers in softball

URBANA — Pepper Gay threw a two-hit shutout in the opener and Kelley Wedel hit a walkoff RBI double in the nightcap to lead the streaking Illinois softball team to a Big Ten-opening doubleheader sweep of Minnesota on Saturday at Eichelberger Field.

Hohl swings baseball to split

MARION — Brandon Hohl homered twice and drove in six runs in leading the Illinois baseball team to a 13-5 win against Southern Illinois on Sunday at Rent One Park.

The junior third baseman, who had three hits and scored three times, belted a three-run shot to left field in the third inning and added another three-run homer in the eighth inning.

Kravetz twirls another gem in baseball win

CARBONDALE — Freshman right-hander John Kravetz (3-0) allowed five hits, struck out four and didn't issue a walk in leading the Illinois baseball team to a 7-2 win against Northern Illinois on Saturday.
