CARBONDALE — Brandon Hohl collected two hits and drove in three runs as the Illinois baseball team picked up an 8-2 win against Southern Illinois to kick off its spring break trip Friday.

Wait's worth it for Nevolo, Illini

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Dennis Nevolo and Roy Kalmanovich — both ranked among the top 25 nationally in singles — paced the Illinois men's tennis team in a 6-1 victory Sunday against Iowa.

After teaming up for an 8-6 doubles victory, Nevolo cruised 6-2, 6-1, and Kalmanovich won 6-2, 6-4 in singles.

Gonzalez aiming for Big Ten crown

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — Illinois' Mario Gonzalez is wrestling free and easy, and it has paid off as the redshirt sophomore will be competing for the Big Ten championship today at 197 pounds.

Gonzalez pinned two opponents — including Purdue's A.J. Kissel in the semifinals — and also earned a decision.

Ruggeri, Maestas pace gymnasts

CHAMPAIGN — Paul Ruggeri won three individual titles and C.J. Maestas two, lifting Illinois' men's gymnastics team to a 355.100-341.300 victory against Ohio State on Friday night at Huff Hall.

Ruggeri claimed crowns in vault, horizontal bar and all-around, and Maestas was victorious in floor exercise and rings.

Baseball beats Lamar late

BEAUMONT, Texas — Jordan Parr doubled home the go-ahead run in the ninth inning to give the Illinois baseball team a 9-8 victory against Lamar on Sunday to close out the YMBL Cardinal Classic.

Catcher Alex Lincoln, who entered as a defensive replacement in the bottom of the ninth, picked a runner off third to seal the win and help the Illini finish 1-1 on the weekend.

Spencer, Riley double up at Big Ten meet; baseball splits in Texas

LINCOLN, Neb. — Freshman Ashley Spencer won a pair of races Saturday, helping Illinois to a fourth-place finish at the Big Ten Indoor track championships.

Riley earns two indoor titles

LINCOLN, Neb. — Illinois' Andrew Riley won the 60-meter dash (6.63 seconds) and the 60 hurdles (7.74) at the men's Big Ten Indoor Championships on Friday.

Teammate Cody Wisslead was second in the 60 hurdles.

Baseball team loses slugfest in opener

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Justin Parr and Reid Roper each drove in three runs, but Illinois lost a 13-12 slugfest to Notre Dame on Friday in the Big Ten/Big East Challenge.

Parr went 4 for 6, and Roper was 2 for 2.

Wrestlers advance to Final Four at National Duals

ITHACA, N.Y. — An unlikely strategy helped the No. 6 Illinois wrestling team advance to the Final Four of the NWCA National Dual Meet Championship on Sunday.
