Richartz sets mark for third

IOWA CITY, Iowa — Illinois freshman Stephanie Richartz broke her own school record in the pole vault Friday while placing third at the Big Ten Outdoor Championships women's track and field meet.

Richartz cleared 13 feet, 3 3/4 inches to eclipse her previous mark of 13-1 3/4. The Mundelein Carmel graduate also holds the UI indoor record for the pole vault, setting that at the conference meet as well.

Seniors go out in style

URBANA — This will never happen again, at least not at Eichelberger Field: Audrey Gallien drove in the tying run. Ashley Conrad scored the winning run.

Gallien and Conrad were two of five Illini seniors who made their final appearance on their home field a successful one Saturday as the fourth-largest crowd in Martin Stadium history (1,023) watched.

With a sweep of Iowa on Wednesday, Illinois softball strengthened its bid to make the NCAA tournament, moving into third place in the Big Ten. At least three teams have made the NCAAs in each of the last five years.

CHAMPAIGN — Pete Cappetta had an inside-the-park home run in the sixth inning, leading Illinois to a 7-0 nonconference baseball victory against Illinois College on Wednesday night.
