Falkin, Kopinski lead win against Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Allison Falkin and Melissa Kopinski set the tone in singles as Illinois won at Ohio State 5-2 on Friday to even its women’s Big Ten tennis record.

Falkin (No. 1 singles) and Kopinski (No. 2) each won in straight sets to help the Illini kick off a weekend road trip in impressive fashion.

Baseball ends Hoosiers' 18-game run

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — In his first college start, Ryan Castellanos took down mighty Indiana on Sunday.

The freshman pitched six solid innings as the Illini beat No. 16 Indiana 3-2 to avoid a sweep while snapping the Hoosiers’ NCAA-leading 18-game winning streak.

Tyler Jay and Bryan Roberts combined for three innings of scoreless relief.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — A dominant performance by Alina Weinstein on Saturday night propelled the Illinois women’s gymnastics team to its third NCAA Championships appearance in program history.

Johnson blanks Oakland

CHAMPAIGN — Senior Kevin Johnson made quick work of Oakland in Illinois’ 4-0 nonconference baseball victory Friday at Illinois Field.

Johnson needed 79 pitches to post his third career complete-game shutout in a contest that took 1 hour, 43 minutes, the UI’s shortest game of the season.

Weinstein, See shine at Big Ten meet

EAST LANSING, Mich. — The Illinois women’s gymnastics team placed fourth during Saturday’s Big Ten Championships, compiling 196.475 points. Nebraska won the eight-school meet with a score of 197.800.

The Illini won their afternoon session.

“We have been talking about momentum all year long and continued to build it in the month of March,” Illinois coach Kim Landrus said.

USC too much for UI tennis team

URBANA — A day after falling to the nation’s top-ranked men’s tennis team, Illinois lost to the second-ranked squad in the country.

Southern California left Atkins Tennis Center with a 6-1 victory Monday following the nonconference dual meet against No. 15 Illinois.

URBANA — There’s a reason the Virginia men’s tennis team is undefeated and ranked No 1. No. 15 Illinois can attest to that after taking on the powerful Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon in a nonconference dual meet at Atkins Tennis Center.

Spencer, Murphy advance at nationals

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Illinois sophomore Ashley Spencer and junior Samantha Murphy advanced Friday at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships.
Spencer posted the fastest time in her 400-meter heat and the second fastest overall, clocking a school-record 51.55 seconds. Georgia freshman Shaunae Miller had the best time  in 51.14.

Distance medley sets record

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Illinois’ Kyle Engnell, Stephon Pamilton, Ryan Lynn and Graham Morris broke an 18-year-old school record in the distance medley relay, finishing sixth overall in 9 minutes, 29.40 seconds Friday at the Alex Wilson Last Chance meet.

The previous record (9:36.33) was set in 1995 by Eric Henson, Ben Beyers, Chris Saunders and Marko Koers.

Roundup: Baseball still streaking

GREENVILLE, N.C. — Freshman Nick Blackburn pitched into the seventh inning as Illinois extended its winning streak to three with a 5-2 win against Boston College at the Keith LeClair Classic.
