UI volleyball transfer ready for stretch run

CHAMPAIGN – Know of a good place to board a horse? Sarah Pomeroy would love to hear from you.

Illinois' newest volleyball player is an accomplished equestrian, too, and she's eager to be reunited during the school year with her beloved Bradley.

UI volleyball near the top

A strong NCAA tournament showing didn't boost the Illinois volleyball team into the national rankings, but it brought the Illini as close as possible.

Illinois (17-11) led the list of other schools receiving votes in the final USA Today/AVCA Top 25. The Illini received 110 points – 10 fewer than No. 25 Arkansas – in voting by a panel of NCAA Division I coaches.

UI volleyball goes down fighting

GAINESVILLE, Fla. It wasn''t exactly the Illinois volleyball team''s night against fourth-ranked Florida. But the NCAA second-round match Friday was an exciting indication of nights to come.

Though the Illini season ended with a 15-8, 7-15, 16-14, 9-15, 15-12 loss to the host Gators, head coach Don Hardin was pleased with his team''s effort.

Illinois on Gard for win

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Lydia Gard converted 17 of her 27 hitting chances Thursday night, leading the Illinois Volleyball team to a 3-1 victory against Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the opening round of the NCAA tournament.

UI volleyball has security in numbers

CHAMPAIGN – Even before the word Illinois appeared on the TV screen, there was no doubt the Illini volleyball team was heading back to the NCAA tournament.

The sight of words like Ohio State, Michigan State, Indiana and Michigan – especially Michigan – were all the confirmation Don Hardin's fourth-place Big Ten team needed to realize it was in the field of 64. How could the Illini not be after finishing ahead of them all in the conference standings?

UI volleyball hits stride

CHAMPAIGN – Tracey Marshall broke a school record. Illinois cemented its status as an NCAA tournament team. And three seniors received a standing ovation in what might have been their final volleyball match at Huff Hall.

Saturday was a productive night for Don Hardin's Illini, who accomplished much in a 15-2, 15-12, 15-4 victory against Iowa in both teams' regular season farewell.

Defeat keeps Illinois on volleyball bubble

In other years, 12 Big Ten victories has been enough to get into the NCAA volleyball tournament.

Tonight, the Illini receive one last chance to reach that total.

Swept by No. 20 Minnesota on Friday night, Illinois returns to Huff Hall at 7 p.m. to take on Iowa in the regular-season finale. The Illini (15-10, 11-8) very likely need a victory over the Hawkeyes to stay in the mix for the postseason.

Brainy Beitz honored

Illinois volleyball player Melissa Beitz has been named to the GTE/CoSIDA District V Academic All-American first team. It's the second such honor for the senior setter, who now will be considered for national Academic All-America honors.
