Magrum focuses on future

By JEFF HUTH

CHAMPAIGN — It might have been the most unsurprising sight of the entire Big Ten women’s basketball tournament. There was Kersten Magrum, sitting on the Illinois bench earlier this month, her left arm snuggly bound in a sling.

Imagine that. The redshirt junior healing from an injury.

CHAMPAIGN — After a two-year absence, the Illinois women’s basketball team is headed back to the postseason.

It’s not the tournament the Illini had their sights set on, however.

Illini women headed to WNIT

As anticipated, the Illinois women's basketball team was not selected to the NCAA tournament. The field of 64 was announced early Monday evening.

UI women have NCAA backup plan

By JEFF HUTH

Despite a late-season fade, the Illinois women’s basketball team still holds out hope of being invited to the NCAA tournament for the first time since 2003.

Should the on-the-bubble Illini (16-13) see their NCAA aspirations burst by four losses in their last five games, however, coach Matt Bollant’s team wouldn’t be done for the season.

Penn's extended stay on bench 'devastating'

By JEFF HUTH

HOFFMAN ESTATES — It’s not uncommon for Karisma Penn to flirt with foul trouble but ultimately sidestep it.

Thursday was not one of those fortunate games for Illinois’ All-Big Ten first-team center.

Penn was limited to nine minutes in the first half by three fouls and totaled 22 minutes before fouling out — tying her shortest performance of the season.

Bollant's squad plays waiting game

HOFFMAN ESTATES — Matt Bollant has been making the case for weeks that his team deserves a spot in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament.

The Illinois coach did so again late Thursday afternoon after Game 2 of the Big Ten tournament at the Sears Centre Arena.

Illini Amber Moore got off a shot from well beyond the arc before time expired, but it hit high off the backboard.

Bollant: Team has done enough for NCAA bid

CHAMPAIGN — Don’t try to convince Matt Bollant that his Illinois women’s basketball team is on the bubble.

Although the Illini have lost three of their last four games to fall to 16-12, the first-year UI coach is unshaken in his conviction that Illinois already has made a strong enough case to merit an NCAA tournament bid.
