Illini wrestlers round into form

CHAMPAIGN — With just two duals remaining in the Big Ten season, Illinois wrestling coach Jim Heffernan is pleased with his team's continued progress, especially after the eighth-ranked Illini knocked off 18th-ranked Northwestern 26-10 on Friday at Huff Hall.

UI women fade late at Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The Illinois women's basketball team is still searching for its first Big Ten win, but Sunday's showing in a 96-84 loss to No. 10 Ohio State certainly was a step in the right direction.

The Illini, led by 23 points from Karisma Penn, were tied with the Buckeyes with 5 minutes remaining before the Buckeyes pulled away.

Wrestlers fall to No. 3 Minnesota

CHAMPAIGN — Mario Gonzalez gave sixth-ranked Illinois an early spark against third-ranked Minnesota, but the Gophers rebounded to win the Big Ten match at Huff Hall.

Gonzalez earned a 5-4 victory at 197 pounds against third-ranked Sonny Yohn, but the Illini couldn't build off that result and lost 25-9.

Tate: Heffernan's calm before the storm

CHAMPAIGN — He's churning inside. A four-time wrestling All-American and Iowa's Male Athlete of the Year in 1987, you know Jim Heffernan is a competitor.

But when his No. 6 Illini tangle with No. 3 Minnesota on Friday night at Huff, the third-year coach may appear as the most relaxed guy in the house.

Coach wasn't about to change a thing.

"In the long run," Heffernan said, "it's going to be a good thing."

LeRoy High School's wrestling team, ranked second in the state in Class 1A, has a power-packed lineup featuring athletes who've been successful throughout their prep careers.

Coach Doug DeWald's lineup includes three wrestlers with 100 career wins and three others who should reach that milestone within the next six weeks.
