D.J. Richardson’s dream has been to play in the NBA.
Today, the former Illini will take the first step toward realizing that goal while participating in front of representatives from all 30 NBA teams — and alongside 63 other college seniors — at the Portsmouth Invitational Tournament.
SALT FORK SOFTBALL
The Storm (5-1) enjoyed a 5-0 week thanks to an offensive attack that generated 75 hits — Camaryn Todd had more than 10 — including home runs by Lea Hall (three) and Emilie McFadden (two). Peyton Meade won three of the games, one by shutout.

Recently: Became the seventh area athlete in history to clear 15 feet in the pole vault, winning the Harold Jester Meet at that height.

URBANA — As a high school junior at Rantoul, Hanna Mennenga became the 10th softball pitcher in IHSA history with a 400-strikeout season.
As great as the feat, it was almost as if no one noticed.
“I sent out so many emails,” Mennenga said, “jucos, Division Is, Division IIs, Division IIIs. Only one Division I emailed and said they might be interested.”
That was Northern Iowa.
CHAMPAIGN — Thomas Lindauer hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning, but it wasn’t enough as the Illinois baseball team lost 8-4 to Eastern Illinois on Tuesday.
The Illini committed three errors in the sixth inning and the Panthers capitalized by scoring all eight of their runs in the frame.
Senior Ryan Pearce hopes to continue his record-setting assault on the school’s list of all-time bests this year.
The defending outdoor shot put state champion owns the school mark (57-01/2) and could break into the all-time area top 15 if he increases that distance by 5 inches. His goal is to break the Class 1A state-meet outdoor record (59-2).
70th Urbana meet Saturday
URBANA — The 70th Urbana Open boys’ track and field meet Saturday will start with field events and running preliminaries at 9:30 a.m. on the Gene Armer Track. Running finals will start at noon with the 3,200-meter relay.
Area schools in the 12-team field, besides the host Tigers, are Champaign Central and Danville.

The Illinois football team held its draft on Tuesday night to determine who would make up the Orange Team and Blue Team for its annual spring game, which takes place at 8 p.m. on Friday at Memorial Stadium.
