Tate: Hambly wants 'to be here for a long time'

CHAMPAIGN – What peaks would the Illini volleyball team have attained if Laura DeBruler hadn't been injured? Has the UI grown into an elite program whereby it is a "destination school" for a hot young coach like Kevin Hambly? Will Huff continue to be the preferred home site over the Assembly Hall? Will Hambly's touted recruits hit the floor running or, like UI rookies in basketball, need time to develop?

Game 10 notes: Illini don't have a ball early

First it was Jereme Richmond who thought something was wrong with the game ball. Then Demetri McCamey. Each spoke up, but no one listened.

Then Mike Tisdale noticed the No. 6 engraved into the basketball, and everyone knew the first 7 minutes, 22 seconds of Illinois' 74-63 win against Oakland on Wednesday at the Assembly Hall was played with a women's ball.

CHAMPAIGN – As Oakland built a double-digit lead against Illinois, you figured something was out of whack.

Game 10 grades: UI earns a B-

PLAYER OF THE GAME, Demetri McCamey

When his team needed him the most, the senior answered the call. He scored 11 straight points in a stretch early in the second half to give the Illini a lead they wouldn't relinquish and finished with 30 points.

Moore's prayer goes unanswered

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Bethany Watterworth put back her own missed shot with two seconds left in overtime to give Oakland a 62-61 victory against Illinois on Wednesday night.

Texas Bowl's a hot ticket

HOUSTON – A sellout. Yes, a sellout.

In a game between a 7-5 and a 6-6 team. And neither team is playing at home. Though one of them is close.

Live from Illinois vs. Oakland

CHAMPAIGN - As Oakland built an 11-point lead against Illinois, you figured something was out of whack.

Who knew it was the ball.

Before No. 16 Illinois outlasted Oakland 74-63 tonight at the Assembly Hall, the Illini and Grizzlies played the first 7:22 with a women's basketball. The "Nike Elite" sphere was 2 ounces lighter and 1 inch smaller than a men's ball.
