This is about the time Tuscola coach Ryan Tabeling thought his team's tough schedule would pay dividends. The Warriors played nonconference games against the likes of Centennial, Addison Driscoll and Cumberland to go along with a grueling slate in the Okaw Valley Conference.
On Saturday, a handful of area teams played for Class 1A and 2A baseball regional championships. A rundown courtesy staff writer Marcus Jackson:
WATSEKA – Cameron Lovrant had five RBI and Connor Allen struck out seven as Paxton-Buckley-Loda beat Hoopeston Area 15-5 in a Class 2A regional baseball game Thursday.
ARGENTA – Matt Pflum and Dillon Hoel each drove in two runs as Tuscola beat Villa Grove 10-0 in a Class 1A regional baseball game Wednesday.
URBANA – Tim Parks' baseball retirement lasted three years, but a casual baseball observer wouldn't know it.
The Urbana senior isn't the first – or 1,000th – high school multisport athlete to face a similar quandary: Do I stick with my best sport year-round, or should I play another sport for my school during the offseason?
CLINTON – Tyler Lieb went 2 for 4 and Mitch Milton and Jordan Latsko each had two RBI as Monticello beat Clinton 11-5 in a Class 2A baseball regional opener Monday.
BLOOMINGTON – When Centennial boys' tennis coach Don Waybright studied the seedings for the Big 12 tournament, he figured his Chargers could wind up as low as fifth.
