Hoffman helps Hawks find range

RANTOUL — Kyler Hoffman found himself cut off from the three-point line in the right corner.

Rantoul junior guard Tanner McLain blocked the path beyond the arc for the senior guard from Prairie Central late in the first half of Friday’s 68-59 victory for the visiting Hawks.

No problem.

Brandon Richardson scored half of his team’s eight points in overtime to help the Hawks pull out a semifinal victory. John Taylor racked up 22 points for Heritage and Richardson finished with 12. Curtis Plank scored 18 points for A-L.

Vaughn helps Chargers to city victory

CHAMPAIGN — It seems unfitting to describe a 6-foot-8 high school basketball player as overlooked, so let’s call Centennial’s Luke Vaughn underrated.

■ LeRoy 47, Fisher 40. The Panthers outscored Fisher 10-4 in the third period to break away en route to a win. Cole Pliura and Dalton Stewart scored 15 and 13 points, respectively, for the Panthers. Grant Pointer led a balanced Fisher attack with 10 points.

Teams of the Week: M-S wrestling in spotlight

In the year coach Rob Ledin won his 100th career match at M-S and the school competed in its 1,000th dual meet in history, the Bulldogs (21-8) returned to the 20-win mark for the first time in 11 years and concluded a 6-0 run past Corn Belt Conference teams to win the undisputed league championship.


Bulletin Board: Centennial reunion on tap Saturday

CHAMPAIGN — Former Centennial girls’ basketball coach TIM FAIRCHILD is organizing a reunion Saturday at the state-ranked Chargers’ home game against Urbana. Former players, their parents, coaches and others who followed the team during Fairchild’s 29-year tenure are invited back to watch the game and socialize afterward.

Finke, Chargers hang tough

CHAMPAIGN — Tim Lavin didn’t give Michael Finke a break. Neither did Decatur MacArthur.

Centennial’s Finke played all 36 minutes of Tuesday’s 60-55 overtime triumph against the Generals, one of the Big 12 Conference’s hottest teams.

The UI recruit hit 6 of 6 free throws in the final 8:44, ending with a game-high 28 points in a game where he was the center of attention.

Elliott, Lee help Comets overcome loss

FITHIAN — Everywhere Kyle Elliott went on the floor, an Armstrong-Potomac defender was there.

It didn’t matter much, though, for the Oakwood senior forward Tuesday.

Elliott drew A-P’s attention throughout the Comets’ 59-48 win against their Vermilion Valley Conference rivals.
