Small schools, big plans

Among area Class 1A and 2A basketball teams last season, the area had one team, Fisher, reach the super-sectional round. The Bunnies' run to the Elite Eight was improbable but served as a prime example that anything is possible under the IHSA's new four-class system.

This basketball season is barely 2 weeks old, but some area teams already are working to establish themselves as contenders to play in Peoria when March Madness rolls around.

Johnson lifts Sabers past SVC rivals

CHAMPAIGN – Zach Johnson scored 14 points and pulled down six rebounds to lead St. Thomas More to a 58-48 win against Iroquois West on Tuesday in Sangamon Valley Conference action.

The win was the fifth of the season for the Sabers.

Central starts to rebound

DANVILLE – After an 0-3 start to the boys' basketball season, Champaign Central entered rebound mode.

It has been a productive phase for the Maroons.

Lilly's late shot lifts Illineks

URBANA – Dan Lilly scored 16 points and Warren Skoza pulled down nine rebounds, leading Urbana University High to a 40-35 boys' basketball victory against Shiloh on Friday night at Kenney Gymnasium.

The Illineks trailed until the final 1:50, when Lilly drilled a three-pointer from the corner on an assist from Malcolm Taylor.
