Names in 2015 to remember

As it stands, six scholarships are available for the Illinois men’s basketball team and head coach John Groce to dole out on the Class of 2015.

Of course, those numbers could change in the next 20 months until current high school sophomores can sign letters of intent with their respective future schools.

IHSA boys' tourney isn't what it used to be

CHAMPAIGN — Steve Kouri was nervous.

Palm-sweating, anxiety-ridden, biting-your-fingernails-type nervous.

After 77 years, the Illinois high school boys’ basketball state tournament had moved away from Champaign.

Away from the Assembly Hall, the state’s most well-known basketball venue, and its precursor, Huff Hall.

At Champaign. Danville won three events, including two by Alexus Jimson-Miller, en route to finishing second in the 37-team Gene Armer Invitational girls’ meet at the University of Illinois Armory.

Daniels: Big changes in the Big 12

Sayonara, Decatur MacArthur and Decatur Eisenhower. Once the Big 12 Conference starts play in the 2014-15 school year, those two longstanding members will not find themselves in the league anymore. Both Decatur schools were accepted into the Central State Eight Conference on Wednesday. The Big 12 athletic directors met Friday morning in Peoria.

Thursday's prep highlights: Finke earns all-state honors

MOLINE — Centennial basketball player Michael Finke was selected to The Associated Press all-state first team in Class 3A.

The all-state team, voted on by a statewide panel of sports writers and broadcasters, was announced Thursday.

Kroner: Teams, fans need to mind their manners

Good sportsmanship has never been in worse shape.

The past month has produced high-profile examples of deplorable and despicable behavior. Unfortunately, each incident occurred at an IHSA state tournament event, and each trumped the previous one in seriousness.

Big 12 searches for conference subs

The Big 12 is getting smaller.

Decatur schools Eisenhower and MacArthur on Wednesday accepted invitations to join what will become a 10-member Central State Eight starting in the 2014-15 school year.

The decision did not catch other Big 12 administrators off guard.
