Tuesdays are big days for Michael Finke.
For obvious reasons, the Champaign Centennial (Ill.) High School big man usually has a game for the Chargers.
Like last night when he scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds during Centennial's 58-44 win against Rantoul (Ill.) High School during a Class 3A Centennial Regional semifinal game.
NORMAL — The basketball game started on time, but in reality, it ended early.
That happens when the opposing team scores 14 points — and allows none — on its first five possessions.
CHAMPAIGN — The trend started before Illinois coach John Groce and son Conner settled into the wooden bleachers on the second deck at Centennial.
Two of the top seeds in the Class 3A Mount Zion Sectional — Springfield Southeast and Decatur MacArthur — had lost by the time No. 1 Centennial tipped off its regional semifinal game against No. 4 Rantoul.
OAKLAND — After Charlie Carver’s last year as Tri-County boys’ basketball coach (2008-09), he and his family relocated to Florida, where he coached for a year near Lake Wales. He found, “we were back and forth a lot,” so he returned to Illinois and landed at West Central (in Biggsville) for the past two seasons.

Recently: Scored in double figures in both of the Sages’ Class 2A regional wins, hitting matching 14-point totals in the semifinals and the finals. Only squad member who has started all 27 games.
RIDGEVIEW BOYS’ BASKETBALL
Three years removed from a 1-26 season, the Mustangs (23-7) captured a Class 1A regional title, beating two Heart of Illinois Conference foes by double-digit margins. Three players reached double figures in the title game, including Trevor McIntosh with 15 points.
ST. THOMAS MORE GIRLS’ BASKETBALL
On Saturday, the Assembly Hall celebrates its 50th birthday. Prep sports coordinator Fred Kroner researched the 83 high school basketball teams that were crowned as state champions at the Hall (57 boys’ teams and 26 girls’ teams) and came up with these five memorable championship games.
Champaign Centennial boys take on Rantoul at the Class 3A Boys' Regional at Centennial High School on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2013.
