Sports in high school to me meant waking up at 6:30 a.m. in the summer to lift. Then I would have speed training camp at 8 o'clock. Next, I would have basketball open gym until 9. Finally, I could rest for about 10 minutes and then go to my golf practice. After I am done putting in the practice for golf, I can actually get 18 holes in. Now it is 1 p.m.
TEAMS OF THE YEAR
1. St. Thomas More girls' golf. Six-person state-meet lineup featured five upcoming seniors.
2. Mahomet-Seymour boys' golf. Senior-laden lineup included only one underclassman, junior Garrett Cox.
3. Schlarman softball. Two freshmen started for Class 1A state runner-up team.
DANVILLE — The Schlarman softball team is unique beyond carrying the No. 1 state ranking in Class 1A into the postseason. The Hilltoppers are one of the few teams that still wear stirrups as a part of their uniform.
Most programs — such as Schlarman's baseball team — have gone to a solid-color sock.
CHAMPAIGN — St. Thomas More golf standout Nathaniel Khachaturian recently signed a letter of intent to continue his career at Lamar in Beaumont, Texas.
Khachaturian was a four-year starter for the Sabers and a member of the state championship team in 2008. He finished fourth in last year's state meet.
ST. JOSEPH — Randy Wolken's state-record 800th victory as a high school softball head coach came Saturday in his 1,001st game at St. Joseph-Ogden. His 14-0 Spartans are closing in on the school's 32nd consecutive winning season in the sport and 24th in a row with at least 20 wins.
