MATTOON – Mattoon accepted an invitation to join the Apollo Conference and will leave the Big 12 Conference after the 2011-12 school year.
The Mattoon school board voted unanimously Tuesday night to accept the Apollo's invitation. The Green Wave will have the largest enrollment in the Apollo. In the Big 12, Mattoon has the smallest enrollment.
CHAMPAIGN – Mikki Johnson is still the concerned parent of teenage athletes, but the former Illinois football player has fewer worries this week.

CHAMPAIGN – Michael Marten found his direction early, and the former Judah Christian athlete never saw a reason to reverse course.
ST. JOSEPH – Gary Garrison, a former St. Joseph-Ogden track and field coach who has been on staff at Mahomet-Seymour since 2004, was inducted into the Illinois Track and Coaches Hall of Fame on Saturday.
This spring will be his 42nd year of coaching high school track. He was head coach at SJ-O from 1972 to 2003. He guided the Spartans to Class 1A state championships in 1993 and 2000, with top-five finishes in 1986, 1998 and 2001.
CHAMPAIGN – When the three Bushue siblings were younger, it wasn't uncommon for them to gather their friends in the backyard, split into teams and play some friendly soccer.
Defeating each other was one thing. Defeating the sun was another.
