'Tough' loss for state runner-up Tigers

FRANKFORT — The Urbana boys’ soccer team was guaranteed to come home with a state trophy this weekend.

It just wasn’t the one the Tigers and their faithful were hoping for.

Peoria Notre Dame scored early, then added two more goals late to claim a 3-0 victory in the Class 2A state championship and deny Urbana its first state championship.

Defense leads the way to state for Tigers

FRANKFORT — Urbana senior forward Jonathan Lukusa and senior midfielder Miguel Fierro make the Tigers’ offense go. Both are tied for the team lead in goals with 21 heading into today’s Class 2A state title match against Peoria Notre Dame.

While both playmakers had solid matches Friday, the play of Urbana’s backline was critical in the win.

Kroner: Urbana has golden opportunity

Prep sports coordinator Fred Kroner’s take on Urbana’s first trip to the boys’ soccer Final Four:
Even before they get their still-to-be-determined state trophy Saturday, Urbana’s boys’ soccer team knows one fact: It is the state’s No. 1 public school team in Class 2A. The other three state semifinalists are private or parochial schools.

URBANA — When Jonathan Lukusa arrived in America from the Congo, he spoke a universal language.

He was 7 years old at the time of the relocation but already was a veteran at the sport Americans call soccer.

“I started playing when I was 2,” Lukusa said.

NORMAL — Even before Urbana Uni High stepped onto the The Corn Crib pitch on Saturday evening, the Illineks had already made history by becoming the first school from Champaign County to play in a boys’ soccer state championship match.

The significance of that achievement wasn’t lost on Illineks head coach Phil Anders and his squad.
