ST. JOSEPH — The 40th Spartan Classic cross-country meet brought about a Showtime performance for Monticello's Steve Schroeder.
The senior ran away from the field, winning the 3-mile street race by 17.32 seconds, and led the state's top-ranked Class 1A boys' team to victory in the 35-school event.
In boys' golf
At Savoy. Medalist DALY O'BRIEN (40) led Monticello to a 4-stroke victory against Champaign Central on the UI Orange. Teammate TYLER TAYLOR added a 41.
At Gibson City. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley compiled a 182 total to defeat Iroquois West, LeRoy and Fisher at Railside. KYLE POOL of Iroquois West earned medalist honors with a 40.
Unity 5, Meridian 0. LOGAN CUNNINGHAM had three goals and two assists to power Unity to a victory in the Okaw Valley Conference tournament.
St. Teresa 4, Sullivan/Okaw Valley 2. The Redskins got second-half goals from NATE HORTENSTINE and TANNER TYPER after falling behind 4-0 in the first half in the OVC tourney.
MAHOMET — Coach Neal Garrison's boys' cross-country team from Mahomet-Seymour placed 12th in last weekend's Peoria Notre Dame Invitational, but that doesn't reflect the team's prowess.
URBANA UNI HIGH BOYS' SOCCER
The Illineks (13-0) are not only scoring a lot but they also are allowing few goals. Twelve of the first 13 opponents have not hit more than one goal while Uni hasn't been held to fewer than three goals by any team. Uni's edge is 77-9. Tarik Koric, George Voulgaris and Patrick Wong all have made 16 goals.
Urbana Uni 8, Salt Fork/Westville 1. GEORGE VOULGARIS scored three times as the Illineks improved to 13-0. TARIK KORIC had a pair of goals, while PATRICK WONG added a goal and four assists. Voulgaris, Wong and Koric each have 16 goals this season. ALEX MESTRE also scored for Urbana Uni.
TUSCOLA — Steve Schroeder ran like a winner and acted like a champion in Saturday's running of Tuscola's 34th cross-country invitational.
The Monticello High School athlete covered the 3-mile course at Wimple Park in 15 minutes, 5 seconds, and was 42 seconds ahead of runner-up Scott Woodard, from Unity, in a race where the top eight placers were all seniors.
At Armstrong. LAURA GROSS had 13 kills in Schlarman's 25-16, 25-9 victory against Armstrong-Potomac.
At Normal. Kelly Wachtel had eight kills and five digs for Centennial in its 25-14, 27-25 victory against Normal West. Paulina Nottingham recorded 15 assists in the victory.
Mother Nature stopped the Cardinals' bid for the Schlarman Tournament crown when the team withdrew despite an unbeaten record on a day school was dismissed early for the heat, but there was no stopping Shelby Ross (55 assists) and Chrisman at Westville's round-robin invitational. The 8-2 Cardinals swept all four opponents.
