Budget crunch forces area high schools to call audibles

When the current school year ends, so too will an established way of doing things for numerous area high schools.

As schools throughout Illinois await promised state money, the lack of available funding now is forcing many districts to implement cuts as a means to curb spending.

Super Seven puts Urbana back on course

URBANA – Renee Hunt noticed the lack of recent cross-country trophies at Urbana High, but she wasn't overly alarmed.

"I kind of assumed we were missing a plaque or two," said Hunt, the Tigers' fifth-year coach.

PEORIA – Renee Hunt is hoping that Saturday will be remembered as a watershed day for the Urbana girls' cross-country program.

Capping a season in which it earned its first regional crown since 1982, Hunt's group finished a respectable 12th in the 21-team field, running one of its best races of the fall.

Root leads Chargers runners to state berth

DECATUR — Ryan Root’s hamstring injury flared up again Saturday. Good thing for the Centennial senior it wasn’t until after he was done running at the Class 2A Decatur Sectional.
Root became the first Charger male cross-country runner to win a sectional title, edging Big 12 Conference rival Michael Clevenger of Decatur MacArthur by a fraction of a second for the victory on a muddy Hickory Point Golf Course.
