PAXTON — Jesse Hahne doesn't come from a family of runners nor has he been training for years.
"In eighth grade, I went out for track," Hahne said, "to get in shape for football. I went to state (in the 1,600 meters), but still thought I would pursue football in high school."
He was on Schlarman's freshman football team in 2009, mostly as a cornerback.
At Monticello. ERIC PONDER, JOHN EVANS and CHAS CAMPBELL finished 1-2-3 as Tuscola won the boys' meet against Monticello. Tuscola's SUE PONDER won the girls' race, but the Sages, led by freshmen KATIE DOUGLAS (second place) and KATHLEEN TRACY (third), took the team title.

At Urbana. Champaign Central won its first Twin City meet since 2003, thanks in large part to a first-place effort from HANNAH WRIGHT, who outlasted runner-up THERESA WELLE of St. Thomas More.
"Hannah's been working a long time for this," Central coach CHRISTOPHER SCHULTZ said. "This is the culmination of a lot of work."
CHAMPAIGN — Centennial's volleyball team, fresh off team honors in its own invitational Saturday, is ranked 49th nationally and fourth among Illinois high schools (regardless of class) in rankings compiled by prepvolleyball.com.

ST. JOSEPH — Jim Acklin wasn't always a superintendent who also coaches at St. Joseph-Ogden.
In Acklin's early years in the district, he was a biology and chemistry teacher who wasn't coaching his primary sport.
An avid runner, he got into cross-country as the Urbana High School coach from 1986 to '89.
At Chrisman. Monticello edged the state's top-rated boys' Class 1A cross-country team, St. Thomas More, 16-17 to win team honors in the annual Chrisman Cowchip Classic on Saturday.
St. Thomas More is continuing its run to the destiny the cross-country program is seeking.
"Since I walked into the STM doors, this is definitely the team I was hoping to get to," third-year Sabers coach David Behm said.
A year ago, St. Thomas More enjoyed its best season — to date — in boys' cross-country, placing fourth in the Class 1A state meet.
