Cross lifts Centennial girls to third straight league crown

NORMAL — The Big 12 Conference girls’ basketball title will stay in Champaign.

Centennial avoided the possibility of sharing the league title by dispatching second-place Normal West 58-34 on Friday night.

The Chargers captured their third straight Big 12 regular season conference championship — and eighth in program history ­— by knocking off the Wildcats.

PBL seniors in zone

PAXTON — Clarissa Gross is a first-year basketball head coach who gets it. She understands there are significant moments for various squad members of a team.

One such time is Senior Night, when a team plays in front of its home fans for the final time in a year. She recognizes that the seniors want more than to be recognized in a pregame ceremony.

Villa Grove girls win first LOVC title

BROADLANDS — Courtney Helm scored 23 points as Villa Grove’s girls’ basketball team won its first Little Okaw Valley Conference title Thursday.

The Blue Devils, ranked 13th in this week’s Class 1A poll, held off scrappy Heritage 54-44 to improve to 8-0 in league play. Lizzy Smith had 14 points as Villa Grove maintained a lead throughout the game.

Thursday's prep highlights: Centennial seniors shine

Centennial 51, Danville 28. Katelynn Martinez, Chelsea Cross and Jasmine Kyler each scored 13 points for the host Chargers,. The Vikings were led by Alexus Jimson-Miller, who scored a game-high 16 points.

Wednesday's highlights: Restad powers Rockets

Unity 46, Maroa-Forsyth 45. Matt Restad had a game-high 22 points for the Rockets at the Okaw Valley Conference tournament.

Justin Deters scored on a layup with 3.7 seconds left to lift Unity.

Tuesday's highlights: Wolf lifts Heritage boys in OT

Cole Hasselbring had 14 points as the Timberwolves pulled away in the second half, outscoring Momence 28-23.

■ Clifton Central 40, Watseka 32. Jake Lyznicki and Alex Gocken (three threes) scored nine apiece, but the Warriors were outscored 19-8 in the second half.
