GIBSON CITY – In a matchup of the final unbeaten softball teams in the Heart of Illinois Conference, Gibson City- Melvin-Sibley stayed that way.
CHAMPAIGN – Looking at his stat sheet after his Chargers defeated Urbana 5-0, Centennial girls' soccer coach Hsiung Marler couldn't help but be excited about what he saw.
Obviously a five-goal win against a quality opponent had the coach thrilled, but it was how the Chargers accumulated those five goals. Paige Whippo, Tessa Schleyhahn, Grace Ayodele, Hannah Radnitzer and Nora Al-Qadi all found the back of the net.
URBANA – If a victory against Centennial last spring didn't significantly boost the self-confidence of the Urbana University High girls' soccer team, a win against Urbana earlier this month should have done the trick.
If nothing else, it further reinforced the sentiment that the Illineks' developing program is making major strides, becoming one of the area's Class 1A powers – and a serious thorn for the bigger schools, too.
WATSEKA – Andrea Palazzolo drove in three runs as St. Thomas More beat Watseka 10-2 in a Sangamon Valley Conference softball game Tuesday.
DANVILLE – Colleen Donohue made 10 saves and Hannah Smith scored in the second half to lift Monticello to a 1-0 girls' soccer victory against Danville on Monday. Smith scored off a feed from Kelsey Hardimon.
Urbana 1, Bloomington 1. Mary Kimball scored unassisted in the second half and Aubrey Morse stopped eight shots as the host Tigers (8-5-1, 3-2-1 Big 12) salvaged a tie.
CHAMPAIGN – Champaign Central won four of six singles matches to pull away from rival Centennial in a 6-3 Big 12 Conference boys' tennis match Thursday. The Maroons, unbeaten in conference play, got singles wins from Kendrith Rowland, Keegan Bannon, Hogan Sills and Patrick Wampler.
URBANA – Kelsey Choquette and Gretchen Booth scored second-half goals as Urbana pulled away from Mahomet-Seymour 3-1 in a nonconference girls' soccer match Tuesday.
RANTOUL – Hanna Mennenga pitched a no-hitter to lead Rantoul past Urbana 4-3 Monday in prep softball.
MAHOMET – Hillary Veitch recorded her fourth shutout of the season and Kara Breedlove scored three goals to lift Mahomet-Seymour to an 8-0 Corn Belt Conference girls' soccer victory against Olympia on Thursday.
