One 'Dynamite' softball system

As a group, they are 10 teenage softball players representing eight high schools from throughout East Central Illinois. They are all seniors involved with the same summer team, the East Central Illinois Dynamite, and for the first time since Schlarman coach Randy Skaggs started the program a decade ago, 100 percent of his upcoming graduates will continue in the sport at the next level.

RANTOUL – Hanna Mennenga had 16 strikeouts and Paige Harms hit a home run as Rantoul defeated Pontiac 5-3 in the third-place game of the Corn Belt tournament Saturday. Kelsey Gass had three hits for the Eagles.

Thanks to a generous greeting from Mother Nature in recent weeks, this could be the year that regional championships are determined in softball and baseball prior to the determination of the conference titlists.

Schools may need to take advantage of a seldom-used IHSA policy that permits regular season games to be played once schools have been eliminated from the postseason series as long as the games take place before the state championship games in their respective sports.
