Teams of the Week: Schlarman boys' track shines

With 10 of 11 squad members who competed scoring points, Hilltoppers went from last in the Vermilion Valley Conference the past three years to first place. Jesse Hahne set a record in the 1,600 meters (4:30.9), and Andrew Kelly (high jump) and John O'Brien (3,200) were also triumphant.

BROADLANDS — Kylee West is a pitcher whose job is usually to throw the ball.

Last week, she was the one who got the ball rolling for Schlarman.

In the wake of an IHSA mandate that the school forfeit 13 softball victories and that head coach Randy Skaggs was suspended for the remainder of the season, West organized a colorful protest.

Blue Ridge 10, Hartsburg-Emden 0. MELINDA WILSON had two hits, including a three-run home run and drove in four to lead the Knights at Heyworth. LIZ CORDES added two hits with two RBI and winning pitcher JORDAN WHEELER, who fired a one-hitter with eight strikeouts, scored two runs.

Spartans put on fireworks show

ST. JOSEPH — If anything is going to pay off for the St. Joseph-Ogden softball team, it is their drive.

The Spartans crushed Westville 14-3 in five innings on Tuesday in their first regional game thanks to home runs from three different girls. Despite the overwhelming offense, SJ-O coach Randy Wolken was looking for more from his team, especially on defense.

St. Thomas More 9, Westville 0. Austin Tabeling and Aaron Pinkerton combined on a four-hit shutout for the Sabers in a home win. Sean Sullivan had three hits and three RBI, while Storm Joop tripled and scored three runs.

Unity 12, Tuscola 11. ROBBY CROUSE had a game-winning single in the bottom of the seven for the host Rockets. SPENCER SHUMAKER and CJ SHORT each went 3 for 4.

NOLAN WALSH, JIMMY KNIGHT and DILLON HOEL each had two hits for Tuscola.

Kroner: To wear or not to wear a mask?

Before it's known which colleges might want to recruit Amber Tabeling to play softball, the Tuscola High School freshman has one less school on her list to consider.

Her father, Ryan, said it was not a tough decision.

Amber Tabeling is a pitcher and an outfielder.

"When she pitches," Ryan Tabeling said, "she wears a facemask."

Schlarman penalized by IHSA

DANVILLE — Schlarman has been ordered by the IHSA to forfeit its first 13 softball victories this spring for using a player whose eligibility had not been cleared, and head coach Randy Skaggs was suspended from team-related activities for the remainder of the school year.

Assistant Greg Hall coached the Hilltoppers on Saturday in their two games at Rantoul.
