All-Area Swimmer of the Year: Danville's Delzell
DANVILLE — Sitting on a cooler with the pool at Danville High School 100 feet away, Jon Delzell leans forward.
He has on a maroon Danville swimming T-shirt and jeans. He exudes the relaxed nature one would expect of a senior who knows he only has a few more months of high school.
Bulletin Board: Vaughn breaks throwing hand
Centennial senior LUKE VAUGHN has broken records nearly every time he has tossed a shot put during the indoor track and field season.
He most likely won’t do so anytime soon after he broke his right hand.
Vaughn, who signed with Mississippi in February, suffered the injury Saturday during a meet at Plainfield North. He was running in a sprint event and placed second.
Danville's Delzell gives it his best
WINNETKA — Jon Delzell of Danville and a Champaign Central relay turned in the area’s highest finishes Friday in the preliminary round of the IHSA boys’ swimming and diving state meet.
Delzell placed 30th in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.11 seconds. The senior also was 39th in the 100 freestyle in 48.49.

Sign of things to come?
Sectional swim times aren’t always a precursor of what will happen at the state meet.
Delzell dedicates state berth to his late father
CHAMPAIGN — Jon Delzell had more to swim for more than a state berth.
Like the memory of his late father, Jack, who died unexpectedly in December.
The Danville senior would have made his dad proud Saturday afternoon during the Champaign Central Sectional at Unit 4 Pool.

Recently: Delivered the area’s only title at the Big 12 meet, winning the 50-yard freestyle race in 22.61 seconds.
In his words: “It was a real good day. I was happy with the win. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to swim at state.”

AT EAST CENTRAL ILLINOIS TOURNAMENT
■ Decatur Lutheran 51, Urbana Uni High 34. The Illineks trailed 26-16 at halftime of the championship game and could not make up any ground in the second half. EMMA HOYER led Uni with 12 points and eight rebounds. MADELINE NELSON (eight points) and KAILA SIMPSON (seven points, six rebounds) also chipped in.

Central's Miller happy with the way things turned out
CHAMPAIGN — Evan Miller learned to swim as a 3-year-old, and he enjoyed it.
“I swam all the time for fun,” he said.
Then his mother tried to expand his horizons.
“My mom thought it would be His mom’s original intent was to focus on fitness.
“We just wanted him active in something rather than spending a summer in front of the TV,” Karyn Miller said.
