MONTICELLO BOYS' CROSS-COUNTRY
The Sages won a four-team meet, where they had the top eight finishers, and then won the 21-school Chrisman Cowchip Classic on Saturday. The top three runners, Steve Schroeder, Luke Zocher and Andrew Hanselman, won their flights, and their teammates in four other races placed among the top three.
CHAMPAIGN — Before Centennial senior Abrar Al-Heeti joined forces with teammate Shelby Quigley for a win at No. 3 doubles against Rantoul last week, she was already a winner in her sport.
As a junior, Al-Heeti tried out but was cut. However, she wasn't discouraged.
At Villa Grove. Hannah Davis' eight kills and Sherelle Coller's five service aces and 16 assists boosted Arthur to a 25-8, 25-6 victory against Villa Grove. Amanda McCollom and Hannah Beeson combined for 23 digs for the Blue Devils.
In boys' golf
At Rantoul. Centennial won the Champaign County Championship at Brookhill as PETER BLACK secured medalist honors with a 69. The Chargers (304) topped runner-up St. Thomas More by 5 strokes. Mahomet-Seymour was third at 312.
Central 9, Eisenhower 1. EMANUEL KOMBA scored four goals, two in each half, and EDDIE LUBAGA added a hat trick to lead the visiting Maroons to a Big 12 victory. JUAN RAMOS added three assists for Central.
In girls' golf
At Gibson City. ALEXIS FREUND shot 83 and KELSEY GALLIVAN fired an 84 to lead St. Thomas More to the title of the 12-team Doc Keller Invitational at Railside. Freund was sixth and Gallivan seventh. Teammate SIERRA MYERSCOUGH (85) was ninth. Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley's EMILY SPANGLER shot an 80 to finish third.
At Arthur. Ashley Tabb had 15 digs and Brooke Tabb added 12 digs for the Lancers in their 20-25, 25-17, 25-22 victory against Tuscola.
Sherelle Coller chipped in with 15 assists, five digs and four aces in the victory.
SAM KOHLBECKER had 22 assists, nine digs, two aces and one block for the Warriors.
In boys' soccer
SJ-O 5, Salt Fork/Westville 3. Nick Geers scored a first-period goal and assisted on three scores in the second half to rally St. Joseph-Ogden to a road victory. Cameron Harpst added two goals for the Spartans, while Kyle Roedl contributed a goal and an assist. Noah Darr scored twice for Salt Fork/Westville, which led 2-1 after one half.
TEAMS OF THE YEAR
1. St. Thomas More girls' golf. Six-person state-meet lineup featured five upcoming seniors.
2. Mahomet-Seymour boys' golf. Senior-laden lineup included only one underclassman, junior Garrett Cox.
3. Schlarman softball. Two freshmen started for Class 1A state runner-up team.
