CHAMPAIGN — Two weeks after establishing a school record in the shot put, Centennial’s Luke Vaughn did it again Saturday.
The senior’s toss of 58 feet, 11/2 inches helped him set a school record in the event, which he won during the Charger Invitational at the University of Illinois Armory. Vaughn had a school-record toss of 57-111/4 in Centennial’s first indoor meet before Saturday.
OAKLAND — After Charlie Carver’s last year as Tri-County boys’ basketball coach (2008-09), he and his family relocated to Florida, where he coached for a year near Lake Wales. He found, “we were back and forth a lot,” so he returned to Illinois and landed at West Central (in Biggsville) for the past two seasons.

Three years removed from a 1-26 season, the Mustangs (23-7) captured a Class 1A regional title, beating two Heart of Illinois Conference foes by double-digit margins. Three players reached double figures in the title game, including Trevor McIntosh with 15 points.

CHAMPAIGN — Three Centennial athletes will sign letters of intent to play football in college. It marks the 16th consecutive year under coach Mike McDonnell that at least one Charger has committed to a college and brings his cumulative total at the school to 83.
Bloch enters elite group
CHAMPAIGN — Former Centennial girls’ basketball coach TIM FAIRCHILD is organizing a reunion Saturday at the state-ranked Chargers’ home game against Urbana. Former players, their parents, coaches and others who followed the team during Fairchild’s 29-year tenure are invited back to watch the game and socialize afterward.
CHRISMAN — One of the state’s winningest boys’ basketball coaches will have a court named in his honor Monday.
Chrisman will dedicate its court for Roger Beals, who won 541 games at the school, prior to Monday’s home varsity game against Tri-County, at about 7 p.m. Beals retired in 1992 with 638 career wins, a total that still ranks 27th on the all-time IHSA list.
Uni swimmers excel in finale
Despite not qualifying for state, Uni High had a series of banner performances in Saturday’s girls’ sectional swim meet at Unit 4 Pool.
PAXTON — John Overstreet’s duties at Paxton-Buckley-Loda changed in late September. When he added activities director to his title as athletic director, he was asked to relinquish coaching duties.
ST. JOSEPH — Jim Acklin wasn't always a superintendent who also coaches at St. Joseph-Ogden.
In Acklin's early years in the district, he was a biology and chemistry teacher who wasn't coaching his primary sport.
An avid runner, he got into cross-country as the Urbana High School coach from 1986 to '89.
