CHARLESTON — The book on the Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley girls' track and field team would be a fast read.
The Falcons had the state's quickest time in three running events during Thursday's Class 1A IHSA state semifinal session at Eastern Illinois' O'Brien Stadium.

SCHLARMAN BOYS' TRACK AND FIELD
With 10 of 11 squad members who competed scoring points, Hilltoppers went from last in the Vermilion Valley Conference the past three years to first place. Jesse Hahne set a record in the 1,600 meters (4:30.9), and Andrew Kelly (high jump) and John O'Brien (3,200) were also triumphant.
Record run for Thompson
CHAMPAIGN — Central senior SAMONE THOMPSON has moved into elite company. She is one of three athletes from the school who have qualified for the girls' state track and field meet in the maximum four events.
CHAMPAIGN — Alexus Jimson-Miller was the best of the best on Monday.
The Danville High School junior was also the best ever in the history of the 31-year-old News-Gazette Honor Roll meet.
For good measure, her times in all three events she won ranked among the top three ever recorded by an area female athlete.
CHAMPAIGN — There's still some work to do at this week's Class 1A sectional, but the Tuscola boys' track and field team is looking toward making some history at the IHSA state finals later this month.
If the Warriors' performance at Monday's News-Gazette Honor Roll Meet was any indication, Tuscola just might surpass the 2008 team's third-place showing at the state finals.
Class 2A regionals
St. Thomas More 9, Westville 0. Austin Tabeling and Aaron Pinkerton combined on a four-hit shutout for the Sabers in a home win. Sean Sullivan had three hits and three RBI, while Storm Joop tripled and scored three runs.
The 31st News-Gazette Honor Roll track and field meet is Monday at the UI Track.
Monday’s meet will start with a scratch meeting at 4:30 p.m., field events at 5 p.m. and running events at 6 p.m., for both girls and boys.
