All-stars headed to Parkland
CHAMPAIGN — The second Parkland College/News-Gazette senior all-star basketball games will be April 14 in the Cobras’ gym.
The girls’ game will start at 1 p.m. at Parkland. There will be two 10-player teams, one coached by Chris Mennig, from St. Thomas More, and the other by Susan Thomas, from Centennial.
Centennial senior LUKE VAUGHN has broken records nearly every time he has tossed a shot put during the indoor track and field season.
He most likely won’t do so anytime soon after he broke his right hand.
Vaughn, who signed with Mississippi in February, suffered the injury Saturday during a meet at Plainfield North. He was running in a sprint event and placed second.
CHAMPAIGN — Former Centennial girls’ basketball coach TIM FAIRCHILD is organizing a reunion Saturday at the state-ranked Chargers’ home game against Urbana. Former players, their parents, coaches and others who followed the team during Fairchild’s 29-year tenure are invited back to watch the game and socialize afterward.

Why she made it: A two-time Little Okaw all-conference pick, she was a second-team All-Area selection as a sophomore. Helped Titans to a repeat league crown this fall and to third place in the Class 1A state finals.
CHAMPAIGN — Stan Bergman never dwelled on his uniqueness as a child.
Growing up with one blue eye and one brown eye was just who he was. “It was never a huge issue,” the Centennial volleyball coach said.
For the past 21/2 years, who he is has changed. He no longer has vision out of both eyes.
Directed the Chargers to a sixth consecutive 30-win season, the third sectional title in five years, a Big 12 Conference co-championship, a school-record win total (37-5) and the school’s highest finish at the state volleyball tournament (third in Class 3A).
CHAMPAIGN — Lauren Cloyd has learned when is a good time to say never.
Had the Centennial senior stuck with her first impression of volleyball, she would have never:
— played for a middle school state championship team;
— played for four high school varsity teams that all won at least 30 matches;
Plenty of Illinois sports had a number of recruits ink letters of intent on Nov. 14.
Even with National Signing Day taking place three weeks ago, we'll take a look each Wednesday leading up to Christmas at some of the recruits other Illini teams were able to sign. Last week we profiled Matt Bollant's first women's basketball recruiting class.
