At Monticello. ERIC PONDER, JOHN EVANS and CHAS CAMPBELL finished 1-2-3 as Tuscola won the boys' meet against Monticello. Tuscola's SUE PONDER won the girls' race, but the Sages, led by freshmen KATIE DOUGLAS (second place) and KATHLEEN TRACY (third), took the team title.
BROADLANDS — At practice, Jeremy Richards is the Heritage volleyball coach. He instructs and corrects. He explains and advises.
On game night — limited to two timeouts per set — he can't often stop the action to fix problems. He becomes the sideline voice of excitement, encouraging the Hawks.

In girls' cross-country
At Urbana. Champaign Central won its first Twin City meet since 2003, thanks in large part to a first-place effort from HANNAH WRIGHT, who outlasted runner-up THERESA WELLE of St. Thomas More.
"Hannah's been working a long time for this," Central coach CHRISTOPHER SCHULTZ said. "This is the culmination of a lot of work."
CHAMPAIGN — Centennial's volleyball team, fresh off team honors in its own invitational Saturday, is ranked 49th nationally and fourth among Illinois high schools (regardless of class) in rankings compiled by prepvolleyball.com.

Recently: Had 18 blocks in a three-set win against Cerro Gordo, tying for the sixth-best one-match performance in IHSA history.
In her own words: "It's weird because Cerro Gordo has always been our rival, and now we're (a co-op) with them in a lot of sports. But in volleyball, we're still rivals."
Monticello girls' cross-country
Tuscola 2, Chrisman 0. Mackenzie Seip had 10 kills for the Warriors in their 25-21, 26-24 victory. Dana Mitchell had six assists and Katelynn Kindred recorded six digs for the host Cardinals. Brett Bishop contributed four aces, three kills and two blocks.
At Chrisman. Monticello edged the state's top-rated boys' Class 1A cross-country team, St. Thomas More, 16-17 to win team honors in the annual Chrisman Cowchip Classic on Saturday.
