Maroons take second at Big 12 wrestling meet

CHAMPAIGN – Adam Acheson was a latecomer to wrestling, but you'd never know it now.

In his third season in the sport, the hard-working and quick-learning Champaign Central junior is a 29-match winner. He's also, after several close calls, finally a tournament champion.

Pins help Centennial top St. Thomas More

CHAMPAIGN – Douglas Lindsey (125), Cam Pickett (140), Lucas McCarty (152) and Shain Andel (160) recorded pins as Centennial tuned up for the Big 12 wrestling meet with a 54-17 win against St. Thomas More on Thursday.

FITHIAN – Oakwood/Armstrong-Potomac's wrestling team will try to clinch its 10th Vermilion County title tonight with a regular season-ending dual meet at Bismarck-Henning. Neither school has lost a match to a county opponent, so the undisputed team title is at stake.

Gilenson seeking third straight Big 12 Conference title

CHAMPAIGN – Aryn Gilenson says he remembers virtually nothing about his first Big 12 Conference wrestling title in 2007.

When it comes to truly forgettable league meets, however, the Champaign Central senior has an all-too vivid memory of his Big 12 tournament baptism one year earlier.

CHAMPAIGN – With a little more than five weeks left in the Big 12 Conference boys' basketball race, three teams have one or fewer league losses. Two will meet Friday at Centennial in a game with major title implications.

Late LeRoy wrestling coach remembered

LeROY – The Bowman Wrestling Invitational will take place Saturday at LeRoy High School, but its namesake will not be present for the 47th annual tournament.

Randy Bowman, 72, died nine days ago, aware that the annual meet was being renamed in his honor this year. His son, Dan, will accept the award.
