Athletes of the Week: Huckstadt and Wynn

Holly Huckstadt, Schlarman Academy, Senior, Basketball
Recently: Had six three-pointers — tying a career high — in back-to-back games as the Hilltoppers beat Georgetown-Ridge Farm and Fountain Central (Ind.).

In her words: “Three-pointers have always been my favorite to shoot ever since I started playing in grade school.”

Beau Anderson and Cole Hasselbring scored 11 points apiece for the Timberwolves in a home victory. Austin Calhoun led the Hilltoppers with 10 points.

Cole Taylor scored eight of his team-high 16 points in the fourth quarter to help the Storm hold off Clifton Central in the championship game. Salt Fork received all of its points from four players, including Max Stutsman (15), Heritage site MVP Ross Learnard (15) and Alec Dutton (14).

Andrew Washington and Khalil Toombs each scored eight points to lead the Chargers, who trailed 31-9 at halftime. Illinois recruit Michael Finke had three points.

Mahomet-Seymour 65, Chillicothe IVC 62. The Bulldogs went on a 22-8 run in the fourth quarter to force overtime and prevailed behind 26 points from CONNOR DIEDRICH and 22 from SAM HOHLFELDER.

Wrestling at the break: STM invite gains reputation with elite teams

St. Thomas More got the name right.

The wrestling tournament the school will host Friday and Saturday at Huff Hall is called the New Year’s Challenge.

Thirty-three schools are coming to the third annual event at Huff. When Sabers wrestling coach Cord Schroeder started the dual-meet extravaganza in 2010, there were 16 teams. Last year, 24 teams competed.


Resilient Lemons shows way for Maroons wrestlers

URBANA — Champaign Central’s wrestling team is filled with feel-good stories, even for some athletes who aren’t feeling well.

The Maroons recaptured the Twin City wrestling title they lost a year ago, winning dual meets against all three local opponents Saturday. The crown is their 14th in the past 15 years.
