All-Area Wrestler of the Year: Urbana's Mammen

URBANA — Cameron Mammen’s story is one of success. It is also one that should provide athletes — and their parents — hope if they are unable to funnel every free waking moment — and dollar — toward the pursuit of excellence in a specific sport.

The 170-pound Mammen won every wrestling match he had as a senior and was the choice as News-Gazette Wrestler of the Year.

Bulletin Board: Vaughn breaks throwing hand

Centennial senior LUKE VAUGHN has broken records nearly every time he has tossed a shot put during the indoor track and field season.

He most likely won’t do so anytime soon after he broke his right hand.

Vaughn, who signed with Mississippi in February, suffered the injury Saturday during a meet at Plainfield North. He was running in a sprint event and placed second.

LeRoy wrestlers can't repeat feat

BLOOMINGTON — Austin Matlock and Caleb Wilson suffered a disappointment Saturday that was even greater than LeRoy’s dual-meet loss in the Class 1A wrestling state quarterfinals.

The defending champion Panthers were ousted by top-ranked Dakota 41-25 at U.S. Cellular Coliseum.

“It’s frustrating that if we’d had a different route, we could have gone further,” Matlock said.

Chargers' Wynn, Schott finish historic run

CHAMPAIGN — It was almost the perfect derivation of the win-win scenario.

For Centennial High School, it went Wynn-Win.

There’s special significance to the modified use of the phrase twice.

The Wynn belongs to a 132-pound senior named Darren, who on Saturday became the school’s second-ever wrestling state championship-match participant.

Wallick pins state title foe

CHAMPAIGN — A few months ago, Josh Wallick was in the limelight as an All-Area football lineman.

The spotlight was focused squarely on the 285-pound junior wrestler who represents Gibson City-Melvin-Sibley/Fisher again on Saturday.

He pinned Gus Eisele, from North Boone, in 2 minutes, 53 seconds to win the Class 1A IHSA state heavyweight championship at the Assembly Hall.

Mammen seals perfect season with backflip

CHAMPAIGN — First, there was a backflip.

Then came a mad dash.

Cameron Mammen’s victory celebration was, in itself, an event.

The Urbana High School senior concluded his career as a dual-sport athlete Saturday night as a wrestling state champion while thousands of onlookers watched at the Assembly Hall.

After winning twice without allowing a point, the unbeaten (40-0) and second-ranked senior reached the finals in 3A at 285 pounds thanks to a 3-1 decision. He has outscored three state foes 20-1.

2A Wrestling: Mammen, Wynn on the move

CHAMPAIGN — Cameron Mammen loves his family, but there are times he can’t be around them. This has been one of those weeks.

The Urbana senior was last at home on Monday. He’ll return tonight.

When his three younger siblings, ages 14, 6 and 5, all came down with the flu the week of Cameron’s most important high school wrestling meet, immediate changes were needed.
