Area star leads EIU past softball

URBANA — As a high school junior at Rantoul, Hanna Mennenga became the 10th softball pitcher in IHSA history with a 400-strikeout season.
As great as the feat, it was almost as if no one noticed.

“I sent out so many emails,” Mennenga said, “jucos, Division Is, Division IIs, Division IIIs. Only one Division I emailed and said they might be interested.”

That was Northern Iowa.

Senior Ryan Pearce hopes to continue his record-setting assault on the school’s list of all-time bests this year.

The defending outdoor shot put state champion owns the school mark (57-01/2) and could break into the all-time area top 15 if he increases that distance by 5 inches. His goal is to break the Class 1A state-meet outdoor record (59-2).

Stricker gets Masters advice

AUGUSTA, Ga. — Steve Stricker wouldn’t mind if Tiger Woods returned the favor, only it’s not that easy.

Woods is back to No. 1 in the world, a return to the top that received a boost last month at Doral when Stricker worked with him for nearly an hour on the putting green.
